About Jake

Hello and welcome!

My name is Jake, and I am an artist from Houston, Texas! I currently reside in Dallas where I am constantly drawing, painting, or day dreaming fantastic and ‘out of this world’ stories to tell, and thinking of ways to tell them. I have been drawn to the arts, and inspired with creativity since I was just a small kid. Storytelling of all types, books, comics, movies, video games, cartoons, and anything else that begins one way and ends another, has been a huge influence in my work. I am constantly finding parallels and deeper meaning in my real world experiences through these connections. I truly believe no matter how simple the story is at its core, the effect a story can have on a person is limitless. Like many artists with less than formal training, finding a niche, or a pathway to display their artwork, I tend to have trouble finishing projects. But “The Adventures of  Sir William” just came out of my hand through a pencil, and onto some paper one day, and I have been building on that first doodle of a simple knight named William that inspired this ongoing serialized storyline ever since! Sir william is a way for me to be the artist, draw and paint in my own medium and style, and I have become very fond of the sharpies and watercolor illustrations I have created. These stories also allow me to develop my literary voice, something I have been trying to hone for quite a few years. With this being a children’s book, it allows me to avoid the depth of detail and planning that adult storytelling usually has. It allows me to focus on the essentials of the story, and thats what children want anyway. At young ages, the kids are looking for the story basics, and for illustrations that can let their minds fill in the blanks and create the worlds, and conflicts that were not written on the page, and THAT is where the limitless creativity and imagination are born.

When not writing or illustrating “The Adventures of Sir William” I work at a “sip and paint” studio as an artist/instructor. My standard mediums are acrylic paints, watercolors, and sharpies. I listen to a lot of music, and watch movies in my spare time. I tend to gravitate (no pun intended) towards science fiction and space related themes in everything I do, or participate in. I read Goodnight moon, Paddington bear, and everything Eric Carl growing up, and those books are certainly my inspiration. I have a tendency to outline everything, almost all of my artwork is done with a simple or heavy black line around the subject of the work.

I love art, and I love telling stories, I hope you and your children enjoy my stories for years to come!

Thank you!

-Jake
